Announcing 13 Campsites
Clarke County Commissioner Patricia DuBose announced on Dec. 8, 2008, that her County Engineer has designated THREE new primitive campsites on the Alabama River for the Alabama Scenic River Trail users. These sites are on sandbars and have signs posted, The sand will be comfortable under a tent, while disembarking a canoe or kayak will be easy. Fire rings will be established so that Leave No Trace practices can be accomplished. The Alabama Marine Patrol will be monitoring the area. In a December 2008 email from Edward Lyon, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers these new and some older camp sites are now all ready for boaters - practice your Leave No Trace factors well - Silver Creek Park, Black Creek, Holley's Ferry, Clifton Ferry, Gees Bend Park, Elm Bluff Park, Portland Park, Steele's Landing. Hokes Bluff area - a NEW one will soon be online there.
Montgomery Marina - A NEW one - about 1000 feet above the Montgomery Riverwalk and Tourism Center area - river left, just downriver of the old smokestack and the 4 lane bridges. Fire ring, restaurant, boat ramp, access roads to city. Camp in woods between ramp and smokestack. Practice well your Leave No Trace ethics, please.
