Alabama Waterway Enhancement Program
The AL Waterway Enhancement Program is your organization or civic group’s chance to bring people together through paddling in your community. Organizations may be eligible for up to $5,000 in grant funding from ASRT to improve access to waterways in your area, purchase paddling and safety equipment, or organize community paddling events.
The 2024 AL Waterways Enhancement Program cycle has closed, and announcements will be made in March as to which proposed projects have been funded.
Campsites
Whether you’re in need of a safe place to pause or on an overnight adventure we’ve collected a list of great campsites all along our waterways for you. The majority of ASRT campsites are primitive and on the water. A full listing of our campsites on our Paddle Planner.
Mile Marker Program
The Mile Marker Program is an initiative that helps make our waterways safer by creating consistent reference points for paddlers. Sets of Mile Markers are installed through partnerships with local paddling groups, emergency responders, and communities.

River Explorers
River Explorers, created in 2013, is a program designed to introduce Alabama’s children to the most basic elements of paddling; education, safety and ongoing stewardship. This program attempts to introduce as many participants as possible to the water which will create future users of our state’s many rivers and streams.
Signs of the Scenic Trail
Alabama Scenic River Trail has created and installed standardized destination signs for paddlers across the state. The signs are placed typically along water access points in partnership with local organizations. Each sign features a map of the waterway, interesting local facts, and basic safety information.
Trail Angels
Trail Angels are expert volunteers who offer their services to paddlers along waterways in their local area. Whether you need help navigating dams and portages, transporting your gear and equipment, or getting directions and updated information, these local guides are on your side. When you’re planning a trip on the water and know you’ll need a helping hand to make it the best it can possibly be, contact your local Trail Angel before you go!
