Trip Summary

Stretching over 40 miles and dropping more than 400 feet in elevation, Hatchet Creek is a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. The creek’s secluded and heavily forested watershed provides stunning scenery, including the rare and breathtaking Cahaba lilies that bloom in shallow water areas during mid-May.

This 9.23-mile section of the creek features a pool and drop scenario, with one notable Class 2.5 rapid that presents a sharp-edged ledge. Approximately one mile upstream from the take-out dirt ramp, the last shoal meets Jordan Lake. The creek is known for its numerous shoals and whitewater areas, particularly after adequate rainfall, making it a moderate-difficulty paddle that requires some skill to navigate.

For those seeking a less crowded whitewater experience, Hatchet Creek offers a peaceful escape. However, boaters should be prepared for some rock-dragging if the creek’s flow is below 400 cfs, especially during the lower summer months.

After a wet and active day enjoy dinner at Triple R Café in Rockford.
