Trip Summary

Explore the serene beauty of the Perdido River on this engaging day trip, perfect for paddlers of all skill levels. This 4.3-mile paddle takes you through a pristine blackwater river characterized by its sandy bottom and slow-moving, tea-colored waters. The river winds through a diverse corridor of forested swamps, wetlands, and rare habitats like pitcher plant bogs and ancient longleaf pine ecosystem, providing an ideal setting for nature enthusiasts and wildlife watchers.

Bonus River History Summary:

  • From 1682 to 1763, the Perdido River formed the boundary between the French colony of Louisiana and the Spanish colony of Florida. After the British victory in the French and Indian War, the river became the eastern boundary of British West Florida. Following disputes between the U.S. and Spain over territory claims, the region saw U.S. military intervention during the War of 1812 and the eventual annexation into the Mississippi Territory. The boundary dispute was finally resolved with the Adams-Onís Treaty in 1819, which ceded all of Florida to the United States and established the Perdido River as the boundary between Florida and Alabama.
