Grand opening of Lake Neely Henry Rainbow City Kayak Launch

RAINBOW CITY, Ala. — On Saturday, May 17, community members, local leaders, and paddling enthusiasts gathered at Rainbow Landing to celebrate the grand opening of the new Yakport kayak launch. The event featured remarks from Neely Henry Lake Association (NHLA) Vice President Syndee Isbell, city officials, and area legislators, who acknowledged the key individuals who worked to install and organize the project.

This exciting addition to Neely Henry Lake was made possible by a $2,200 grant awarded to NHLA through the Alabama Scenic River Trail’s (ASRT) 2024 Waterway Enhancement Program. The launch was developed in response to the growing demand for safe, accessible entry points for non-motorized watercraft.

In collaboration with Rainbow City, NHLA has created a stable, user-friendly platform ideal for kayaks, canoes, and similar vessels. The new launch enhances safety and ease of use for paddlers of all experience levels. The Rainbow Landing project is a strong example of how ASRT’s programs are supporting local efforts to create inclusive outdoor recreation spaces.

Sen. Andrew Jones remarked at the event, “You guys know I love trails and waterways are an important part of our state’s trail systems. We know that outdoor recreation has grown exponentially since the pandemic and the installation of this launch will help leverage that momentum here in Rainbow City and for the surrounding area…”

Mayor Joe Taylor of Rainbow City emphasized the broader community impact, saying, “It’s an exciting time for this little piece of property, and it’s a great place to hit the river. We are proud to have been a support mechanism for the NHLA. They’ve put us [Rainbow City] in a place where we can be absolutely successful.”

Martha Grace Mize, director of growth and development at ASRT, spoke about the intent behind the Waterway Enhancement Program. “We are excited to fund programs that are for communities and by communities, which is what WEP is all about,” said Mize.

Mize further explained that the program supports public access improvements, safety equipment, and community-led events—all designed to increase safe, fun, and inclusive enjoyment of Alabama’s waterways.

ASRT and NHLA were delighted to welcome Rep. Mack Butler, Rep. Mark Gidley, Rep. Craig Lipscomb, and Sen. Andrew Jones to the event and appreciated their enthusiasm for community-focused outdoor recreation development.

The NHLA has received another grant through the 2025 Waterway Enhancement Program cycle. The funding will support the NHLA Gadsden Kayak/Canoe/Paddleboard Launch Project, to include a new public access launch site upriver in Gadsden also on Neely Henry Lake.
