Fun, Safe, Welcome:
ASRT's Summer Paddling Programs
Every summer, ASRT offers various guided trips and skill-building opportunities, through partnering with local outfitters, Trail Angels, and partners, to equip paddlers with all they need for their next great adventure. Everyone deserves a chance to explore the beauty of Alabama’s rivers, and we’re here to make that happen!
Learn more about our Summer Paddling Series (SPS), skill-building Bring Your Own Float (BYOF) trips, whitewater Sweet Caroline Fridays, and Special Event and Partnership Paddles below.
Summer Paddling Series (SPS)
Our popular Summer Paddling Series (SPS) is a collaboration with ASRT outfitters across the state, designed to make it easier than ever to get on the water—no gear or experience required! Running from May through August, these guided trips offer a fun and welcoming way to explore Alabama’s waterways with a group of fellow adventurers.
Just bring yourself—we’ll handle the rest. Each paddle includes all equipment, shuttle service, and guidance from a local expert who knows the waterway inside and out. You’ll need to pay the rental fee to the outfitter that morning, but the fun is on the house! Whether you’re brand new to paddling or just looking for a low-stress outing, SPS is the perfect way to enjoy a day on the water with a friendly, supportive crew.

Bring Your Own Float (BYOF)
Bring Your Own Float (BYOF) offers a unique opportunity to paddle alongside a local Trail Angel on one of their favorite waterways—while sharpening your paddling skills along the way. These trips are designed to help you grow more confident and self-sufficient on the water, with chances to ask questions and swap tips on key topics like self-shuttling, tie-downs, and trip planning.
Led by ASRT’s volunteer Trail Angel Guides—dedicated locals who serve as friendly, knowledgeable resources for the paddling community—these adventures are ideal for advanced beginners to intermediate paddlers ready to explore less-traveled stretches without an outfitter.
Just bring your own boat and supplies—we’ll provide the guidance, local insight, and great company!
Sweet Caroline Fridays
Sweet Caroline Fridays offer a laid-back way to experience the thrills of whitewater paddling at Montgomery Whitewater. Opened in 2023, this Olympic-standard recirculating whitewater course was designed for pros and competitors—but with Sweet Caroline Fridays, we’ll be taking you and others who register through the family-friendly side where the current is turned down for a more relaxed, beginner-friendly vibe.
These “low-flow” days are perfect for paddlers of all skill levels to get on the water, enjoy a splash, and gain experience in a welcoming setting. Even if someone in your group isn’t ready to paddle, they’ll still have plenty to enjoy—like outdoor climbing, scenic walking paths, live music, and great food and drinks. Plus, they can cheer you on from the observation bridge while staying totally dry!

Special Event and Partnership Paddles
These special paddles take you on one-of-a-kind adventures across Alabama, hosted in collaboration with our various waterway partners. From group floats to clean-up efforts, each event offers a chance to connect with fellow paddlers, celebrate our shared love of the outdoors, and give back to the rivers and streams we all enjoy.
Whether you’re joining to explore new water, meet like-minded adventurers, or lend a hand volunteering, these events promise memorable experiences and meaningful impact. Be sure to check each event listing for details—some may require you to bring your own equipment, while others will have gear provided.
Interested in partnering or sponsoring a paddle or clean-up? Reach out to Shannon Mo’ikeha Taylor, ASRT’s Waterways Program Manager—we’d love to work with you!
Why does ASRT host group paddles?
Every paddling trip we host is a chance to connect people to Alabama’s incredible rivers. The Alabama Scenic River Trail’s Summer Paddling Programs are designed to make our waterways accessible, fun, and educational for all, whether you’re brand new to paddling or a seasoned adventurer. These programs strengthen outdoor recreation, boost local tourism, and foster a deeper appreciation for Alabama’s natural resources.
And we know they work—just look at the numbers! In summer 2024, our brand-new Summer Paddling Series brought more than 45 paddlers from across the Southeast onto Alabama’s rivers, covering nearly 23 miles across four different waterways.
