ASRT Press Release: Cahaba River Mile Marker Safety Project Kickoff (2024)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Alabama Scenic River Trail Celebrates the start of the Cahaba River Mile Marker Safety Project by partnering with the Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, and Cahaba Blueway.

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – The Alabama Scenic River Trail (ASRT) is proud to announce the launch of the Cahaba River Mile Marker Safety Project by the Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, and the Cahaba Blueway on the Cahaba River.

ASRT’s Mile Marker program aims to improve the safety of river users by working with local partners to place standardized signage, similar to highway markers, along rivers across the state. ASRT partners with Jacksonville State University to ensure that each mile marker has GIS coordinates that standardize the placement and location of each sign. Local emergency responders and rescue squads can reference these GIS points to improve their response time to waterway emergencies, increasing community safety for water recreation enthusiasts.

The Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, and the Cahaba Blueway are valued local ASRT network members who have partnered to bring this Cahaba River Mile Marker Project to fruition. These groups have been working with ASRT over the past several months to coordinate the start of this critical initiative for the Cahaba River. The kickoff will mark the completion of the project’s planning phase and the beginning of the installation.

The Cahaba River Mile Marker Kickoff event will be on Friday, April 19, from 5-7 PM, at Cahaba Brewing Co. in Birmingham, AL, and will be hosted by the Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, and ASRT. The public is invited to attend the event to hear more about the Mile Marker program and see the handover of the mile marker signage to the Cahaba River Society and Cahaba Riverkeeper.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, and Cahaba Blueway in taking this important step toward enhancing the safety and enjoyment of waterway users on the Cahaba River,” said Alabama Scenic River Trail Executive Director Andrew Szymanski. “The dedication and collaboration of our partners on this project reflects the community’s commitment to ensuring that Alabama’s rivers remain safe and accessible for freshwater recreation.”

The Alabama Scenic River Trail congratulates the Cahaba River Society, Cahaba Riverkeeper, and Cahaba Blueway on launching the Cahaba Mile Marker Safety Project. We are thrilled to see how this initiative will continue positively impacting waterway safety on the Cahaba River in the coming years.
